Went to remove the rear wheel of my Duke the other day to get new tyres fitted & discovered that it has a non-standard nut. I had borrowed the 46mm socket and breaker bar a mate uses to take the wheel off his 996, and was surprised when it didn't fit. Surprise turned into a massive sense-of-humour-failure when I discovered that the previous owner fitted a racing nut to the rear wheel.
I've come across all sorts of crazy bolt-on bling over the years but this has to take the biscuit. As far as I can see the only benefit of to give the previous owner some schadenfreude at the pain in my hole I'm having trying to remove it. Its not like this nut is used for anything essential such as CHANGING THE FUCKING TYRES! Oh wait... The nut is 12-pointed as you can see from the photos, and is 48mm at its narrowest point and 52mm at its widest. According to Ducati Dublin the previous owner would have got a custom socket with it that he should have passed on to me. Grrrrrr. Asshole. After some discussion with the guy in the local Teng Tools distributor he reckons a 1 13/16ths socket should fit. I measured it with a calipers and it does seem to be bang on, surprisingly. Fingers crossed! (Yes, I know my wheels are in dire need of a wash. In my defence they are in even more dire need of tyres...) |
