"JFTP::write: Bad response" error in Joomla PDF Print E-mail

While setting up the website for the Dog Trainers Association of Ireland Ltd I came across a recurring error whenever I tried to enable FTP upload: JFTP::write: Bad response followed by the warning An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file to write!

I checked the permissions on configuration.php and user www had write access so all was ok there.  As futher proof this error only appeared when I tried to enable FTP.  I spent a lot of time googling the problem and found lots of people rambling about permissions and suggesting it was a bug in Joomla 1.5.7, but after checking permissions for the 100th time and upgrading to Joomla 1.5.14 I still had the problem.

Joomla editor missing buttons after upgrade PDF Print E-mail

I upgraded the Dogs Aid Animal Sanctuary website from Joomla 1.5.7 to Joomla 1.5.13 to get all the recent security patches and my wife had a stroke because a lot of the icons she uses regularly for Article Editing had disappeared.

It took me a while to realise how to get them back so here's how to do it.  The reason is that Joomla 1.5.12 upgraded to TinyMCE version 3.0 which comes with a number of different functionality settings.  It is set to "advanced" functionality by default and what we have to do is enable the "extended" functionality as follows:

Creating a nice 404 redirect with Joomla PDF Print E-mail

A volunteer for Dogs Aid Animal Sanctuary where my wife works spotted this really cute 404 redirect page over at smartdestinations.com and we wanted to get something similar for the Dogs Aid site.  We contacted smartdestinations.com for permission to use the image and they very kindly obliged (thanks guys!), but then I realised that there's no easy way to change the standard 404 error.

Thanks to jgcabs over at the joomla forums I found this quick & easy hack to the standard fugly Joomla 404 error screen.
